		<description>Nice post - I wasn&#039;t aware that depression sufferers went straight to REM sleep - getting past stage 2 is my problem and that depresses me although I sleep better now after cutting out all coffee. Don&#039;t know if it&#039;s just a coincidence!</description>

As you indicate in your conclusion here, further research is still necessary for a more complete understanding of the relationship between sleep-insomnia-depression.

I wonder though, in reading this, might there be &quot;catch up&quot; sleep made throughout the week or the daytime, and has the study controlled for this in any way? My thinking here, on this line, is that we know people with depression tend to have less energy and drive (features of the illness itself), and traditionally its been thought that those with depression tend to sleep more than those without (of the top of my head I believe that may have been a diagnostic criteria in the DSM-IV) - yet your article here provides some good food for thought that, during the night at least, this may not be the case at all.
