The Power of Words

Sticks and StonesAs a kid we used to always chant the phrase…
“Sticks and Stones may break my bones – but words can never hurt me”.

And that has to be the farthest from the truth of just about any saying I’ve ever heard!

Words are POWERFUL. They have the power to BUILD and they have the power to DESTROY.

I think this phrase had to of come about by someone trying their best not to believe the hateful hurtful things said to them. It’s simply used as a self-defense mechanism.

Broken bones heal. But words can break a spirit that may never heal.

Why are words so powerful?

When we are repeatedly told something, our subconscious believes it – even if it’s a big fat lie!

For instance growing up I was consistently told …

“You are too fat to wear shorts.”

“My oldest and my youngest, my two heavy set kids.”

“You are going to grow up to be as fat as Aunt Evelyn”. (My aunt weighed over 400 pounds and was only 5’ tall.)

And as my maiden name was Bass the kids in the neighborhood used to love to chant “Cindy Bass has a fat A …”

Continuously hearing these words gave me a very negative self-image of my self. Regardless how little I weigh, I think I’m fat. I have struggled with my weight my entire life – as I have been determined NOT to be as fat as Aunt Evelyn.

Words do hurt.

If you choose to change – if you choose to undo the damage done by negative remarks said to you – TAKE HEART. You can reprogram your mind from all the negativity.

When negative thoughts creep into your mind, immediately reject them and replace them with a positive remark.

Share and Enjoy!
